The Tru Skool Beat Grinder producer battle is back tonight at Liv and will have some of the area’s finest hip-hop producers engaged in head-to-head battle for local bragging rights. The event is known to bring out the real beat junkies and has become quite an institution in the regional hip-hop scene.
Ten contestants will step up with their hottest tracks, even doing battle using identical samples to see who’s really doing their work on the boards. The three-round event will be hosted by Grap Luva and will feature performances by locals Kokayi and Oddisee. Damu and Underdog will be holding down the turntables all night long—so expect to hear the finest in deep cuts, rare grooves, and vintage hip-hop.
Liv is located at 11th and U Street NW. Doors open at 9 p.m.; $7.

NY- close out yet another hump day (and start the long weekend for most) with DJ Myles and DJ Lindsey tonight. Dance, Drink, Dance…And enjoy the music. and enjoy these AMAZING fliers. and the guest DJ’s. And get your pictures taken… all in one spot.
From Hump Resident Dj Lindsey:
“This is an exciting week for the Hump. We have Giovanni returning as our host and The Twilite Tone on turntable duty. It’s going to be a good one. Some of you don’t know but Tone produced a heap of songs for Common back when he was Common Sense, you can see him in the video for “Take It EZ” here doing hype man duties and hear Common rap about his coveted mixtapes on “Reminding me (of Sef).” Check Kanye’s blog he’s mentioned there too. Oh and his name is Anthony Khan, nephew of one of my favorite artists of all time Chaka Khan. If all this isn’t enough, just come through tonight his sets speak for themselves.”

I recently gave my feet a treat that was sorely need when Dam Funk landed in
SF. The guys from 4OneFunktion put on a tight show too, along with DJ Jay 1.
The Elbo room was packed with bodies in motion, somehow I managed a few
pics of Dam and Co.

Yo! This is a special edition Froback to my early days in the biz. Met these cats when they left LA (for most of the group members first time) and landed in DC to record their first LP as the crew called Sex Cymbal. That project never saw the light of day (industry rule #4080 wins again) but that didn’t stop the 5 man crew from living out their dreams. Hence the hook from the song. The album was a dope blend of Hiphop beats mixed with damn good sanging! If you can find the album go straight to the track “Live for today” that song is on my lifelong playlist of best songs i ‘ve ever heard list forever! I run into Pape , Bro Rahim and Baby Paw from the crew since moving to LA. You Berto ,Ced ,Tre, Whats really good holla at your folks. Injoi and have a safe weekend!

While watching this story abt how BET/MTV are loosing advertisers bc of their explicit rap content, I ended up listening then watching to the story that came next, on 23-year-old musician Esperanza Spalding. This beautiful afronista is doin her thing on a upright bass while singing jazz melodies that warm up your insides! Dopeness.

Esperanza’s tv debut on Letterman a few weeks ago:
in Copenhagen:
Love her!!! Definitely a new fav! If u want more, buy her album “Esperanza” on itunes!
